Contemplating Impermanence brings together artists from a range of places including Singapore, United Kingdom, Japan and Australia. They work with diverse languages, processes and materials that include paint, paper, ceramic, textile, photo media and sound in their engagement with exhibition spaces.

Exhibitions are by their very nature transitory, performative events. They occupy a space for a time and then dissolve. Being a register of processes that are constantly in flux, they move and shift at will. Every change is a new proposition offering fresh moments to look and reflect. Remaining in motion through a consideration of tactility, colour, scale and a complexity of ideas, which include the rich history of display, they map each artist’s knowledge and feeling.

Contemplating Impermanence manifests through change, impermanence, time, materiality and perception. Emerging in formal and poetic ways the exhibition is attentive to the Project8 Gallery site it occupies. An awareness of this relationship promotes repetitions, and visual dialogues becoming more apparent. The spaces between and the passages through, are key to the interconnectedness and reach of each artwork and the overall perception of the installation.

Movement continues throughout the exhibition between works, including the areas of calm and emptiness, coalescing into a COMPOSITE, where works different in kind are reconciled, not unified, contributing to the making, and unmaking of the installation over time.
