SPENCER HARRISON: Semi/Permeable

Semi/Permeable investigates the dynamic space where opposites meet and negotiate; soft with hard, natural with artificial, order with disorder. These liminal spaces emerge, not as static borders, but as zones of possibility. The title borrows from cellular biology, where cells allow certain molecules to pass through their boundaries while holding others back. Abstraction functions similarly here: as a filter, a mediator, a threshold through which ideas, forms and perceptions flow.

The works juxtapose crisp lines overlaying wash-stained papers and canvas; rigid structures intersect with organic flows; and precise forms contrast with imperfect natural surfaces. The works suggest that boundaries are never absolute: the hard edge can yield, the fluid can constrain, and meaning itself emerges in the negotiation of difference.

The work invites reflection on the boundaries of our daily lives, between the built environment and our place in the natural world. Semi/Permeable ultimately explores what happens in the in-between: at the porous edge where clarity and ambiguity coexist, and where new forms and insights emerge.
